Kalamazoo Islamic School (KIS) started at Kalamazoo Islamic Center (KIC) to meet the needs of Muslim children living in and around the greater Kalamazoo area. Although KIC was established to serve the needs of the university student population at Western Michigan University, it soon became apparent that many of their children's religious needs were not being met.

Many of the parents in the community joined together to open up the Kalamazoo Islamic School so that they could provide their children with Islamic education each week. As the years went by, the population of the community grew and now KIS has around 200 students enrolled each year. Students vary in age from as young as four (pre-school age) through highschool. KIS also has adults, both college age and beyond, enrolled in their senior classes.
